Prof. dr Zoran Vujčić, Full professor, HFBU

Full professor at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Belgrade - Faculty of Chemistry. Author of over 180 scientific publications, which have received over 1400 citations. Participates in the implementation of WP 1, 2, and 3 of the project UniCorn.

He graduated, obtained his master's degree, and obtained his PhD at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade. He has built his career at this faculty since 1988, from assistant to full professor. He participated in the realization of more than 20 doctoral dissertations, supervising over 15 of them.

Scientific interests

Production and application (immobilization) of invertase; production and characterization of enzymes for starch hydrolysis and their application in bioethanol production; production of recombinant proteins important in biotechnology (amylases and laccases); fermentation technology; application of oxidative enzymes (peroxidases, phenoloxidases, and laccases) in the removal of xenobiotics (phenols, dyes, pesticides) from wastewater; isolation, characterization, and application of various proteins (enzymes, antibodies, reserve proteins, lectins, enzyme inhibitors) from different sources (studying their structure, interactions with small molecules, and ways of improvement); development of new techniques and materials for enzyme immobilization (using natural, synthetic, and composite materials) and their use in continuous substrate biotransformations (bioreactors) and biosensors; development of new zymographic techniques; application of enzymes and microorganisms in bioremediation; bioethanol, biodiesel; bio-renewable raw materials as a source of new products; chemistry and biochemistry of food; aromas, allergens, antioxidants; the connection between natural product chemistry and food chemistry and various contaminants of natural origin; chemical modifications of proteins.

Engagement on projects

He was PI of the national project 172048 in the period 2011-2019 and the innovation project 391-00-16/2017-16/5 funded by the Ministry of Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. He also participated in several national and international projects, as well as COST actions. He is the author of two practical manuals for students specializing in biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade.

Awards

He led and was a member of teams that won awards for inventions and first place at the prestigious national competition for Best Technological Innovation in 2010 and 2014.
